1996 CENTENARY EVENTS IN RUSSIA
Compiled by the William Morris Society (UK)
EXHIBITIONS
From March 1996 onwards
William Morris Exhibition
The Russian National Library in the former Leningrad
was then known as the Saltykov Schchedrin Library, named
after Mikhail Saltykov, a 19th century author who wrote
bitter socialist realist novels under the pseudonym of
Schchedrin. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of
Morris's birth the library organized in 1984 a learned
conference on Morris and his work which attracted many
Russian experts and was supported by articles in the art
journals of the USSR. This 1996 exhibition is based on the
Library's own holdings of Morris's works. Ray Watkinson and
Frank Gray (University of Brighton) have contributed
supplementary material in the form of photographs and copies
of documents.
