Jonathan Chiswell Jones Potter

Jonathan has been a professional potter since 1974, making hand-thrown and brush-decorated porcelain, bespoke dinner services, corporate gifts and commemorative wares. He also works in reduction fired lustre, a medium pioneered in Britain by William De Morgan. Jonathan’s work may be bought from his showroom (see below), open Monday to Saturday, 10.00 am - 5.00 pm.

Dorothy Coles Textile-maker

Dorothy uses wool, silk, linen, cashmere and mohair alone, or two fibres blended, for spinning and weaving. Spun yarn is knitted (Fair Isles, Arran, etc.), crocheted or woven. She makes bags, scarves, cushion-covers, table linen and textiles for garments. Dorothy will donate to the William Morris Society the money paid by our members for her work.

General typographic, graphic design and calligraphy skills, especially book and pamphlet design, but also posters, t-shirts, compact discs, web design and decorative maps. Judy Hanks-Henn Designer, Painter and Gilder

Judy creates “heirloom painted panel doors” using oil and gold gilt. A graduate of Harvard University’s School of Design, she has studied William Morris for more than 20 years and meticulously reproduces his designs on the doors which she decorates.

Kurt Henry Musician

Songwriter and musical artist. His CD entitled One is available for $15, or $10 for WMS members. Some Morris-related pieces are included on his forthcoming album which might be entitled Love Is Enough or Idle Singer of an Empty Day.

Peter Lawrence Printmaker and Book-designer

Peter has been a book-designer for many years and is Managing Director of Oxford Designers & Illustrators. This year, one of his own wood engravings won an award at the National Print Exhibition and two others were shown in the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. He says: “I have some engravings following a trip to Iceland which may be of interest to WMS members.”

Madeleine Parkyn Website Creation and Management

Operating as Envoy, Madeleine works with organisations to help them develop their use of the Internet. This ranges from preparing Internet strategies and website briefs through to training staff and creating, managing, marketing and evaluating websites. Maureen Rothstein Potter

As a student at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, Maureen was trained in the reduced stoneware tradition of Bernard Leach. In 1955, she set up the Shepherd’s Well Pottery which she ran until 1960 with David Eeles. Apart from a short period after her marriage, Maureen has taught pottery since 1953, at numerous Adult Education centres in London, Fareham and Portsmouth. Her work has been exhibited at the Craft Centre and the Design Centre (both in London), the Southern Ceramic Group and various galleries, most recently in Winchester Guildhall and Portsmouth Museum. Besides her other work, she makes the “official” William Morris Society mug - featuring the ‘daisy’ motif - which is sold at Kelmscott House.

Christopher Vickers Furniture-maker and Box-maker

Christopher is a highly skilled woodworker working in the style of Arts & Crafts designers such as Philip Webb, CFA Voysey, Ernest Gimson and MH Baillie Scott. Among the items available to commission are replicas of the Morris adjustable armchair designed by Webb, GE Street’s Student’s Table and Voysey chairs. Chests and small items of furniture are often kept in stock and can be viewed by appointment.

Nancy Winfield Bookbinder

“I work in a small company called Salisbury Bookbinders whose history goes back to the 1840s. In our new bindings, we use the finest leathers and gold leaf and ensure that their construction and design will give pleasure for generations to come. We also produce albums, presentation boxes and visitors’ books, all of which make unique gifts for christenings, weddings and special occasions.
