WILLIAM MORRIS SOCIETY:
ACTIVITIES AT 1998 MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION
CONVENTION
CHICAGO, 27-30 DECEMBER 1999
This year's Modern Language Association annual
convention will take place 27-30 December in Chicago. As
usual the dates fall between Christmas and New Year's and,
as usual, the William Morris
Society in the United States has organized several
events--sessions of papers and a visit
to the Glessner House followed by a social
gathering.
All members of the Morris Society are invited to these
free events. Passes may be needed to attend the MLA
sessions--contact Mark Samuels Lasner, Biblio@aol.com.

RSVP to Mark Samuels
Lasner for details of location.
The Society has arranged for a special visit to the
Glessner
House, one of the gems of Chicago, indeed, of American,
19th century architecture. Designed by H.H. Richardson in
the 1880s, this Romanesque dwelling is furnished with
Aesthetic Movement and Arts and Crafts furniture and
decorative arts including, prominently, the work of Morris
and Co. This tour begins at 3.00 pm and will take about one
hour. Our member, Sandi Wisenberg, has cordially invited us
to come to her home for a special gathering--food and drink
provided, of course--at 6.30 pm the same evening. (The time
in between will allow MLA convention participants to stop at
their hotels, which are located halfway between the Glessner
House and Ms. Wisenberg's apartment.)
As with all Morris Society events, these activities are
free to members and their guests. Space is, however,
limited. We therefore ask that you let Mark Samuels Lasner
know by 24 December if you plan to come, Biblio@aol.com.
