January to December 1996
William Morris Gallery Centenary Exhibitions
The Gallery will be holding three special exhibitions on Morris during the year: from January to April 1996 there will be an exhibition of designs and working drawings by Morris and Morris & Co entitled 'Beautiful & Logical Form'; from May to August an exhibition of Morris & Co's stained glass; and from 14 September to 7 December an exhibition of 'Morris & Company Tiles'.

Monday, 8 January to Sunday, 31 March 1996 (excl week 4-9 March) David Evans Craft Centre of Silk
Morris and his contemporaries had close association with Crayford as many of their textile were printed there. One of Morris's famous chintz designs was "Cray", named after the river on which the David Evans factory stands, while another chintz, "Lodden" is still printed in scarf form to this day. Among many items connected with Morris on show at the exhibition are original blocks used to print the "Cray" and some original fabrics. Some of the original wallpapers and fabric from Morris's home at Red House at nearby Baxleyheath can also be seen. Tickets £1 adults & 75p concessions available at the silk factory shop. A pre-bookable guided tour of the Craft Centre is also available for £2 adults & £1.50 concessions which includes the cost of the exhibition visit. Opening hours are 9am to 5 pm M-F, 9am to 6pm Sat. Access by road: A2 to Black Prince interchange, then proceed along Bourne Road a short distance in the direction of Crayford. Bourne Industrial Park is on the right side of Bourne Road. Centenary Exhibition
The exhibition, held at St. Nicholas Priory, The Mint, in Exeter, consists of a collection of textiles and carvings brought back by Morris from his first journey to Iceland in 1871. It exemplifies traditional Icelandic crafts, alongside items of Morris' own designs.

A Selling Exhibition: "Art, Craft and Calligraphy from Ditchling, 1907 to the Present Day"
Ditchling has had a special place in the tradition of the Artist Craftsman since Eric Gill moved there in 1907. In his wake came Hilary Pepler, printer; Ethel Mairet, weaver; Edward Johnston, calligrapher; Dunstan Pruden, silversmith; David Jones, painter and engraver; Edgar Holloway and others. In 1918 Frank Brangwyn bought "The Jointure," an Elizabethan house in the village. Now the Ditchling Museum is to be re-established at "The Jointure," together with the Edward Johnston Foundation and its workshop for the calligraphy and lettering arts. Sales at this event will be in support of that project.

Morris at Kelmscott

Morris Glass Exhibition at Keighley
This exhibition, held at Cliffe Castle Museum, Keighley, Yorkshire, is a long-term display of the important collection of glass made by Morris and his associates and which is the property of Bradford Art Galleries and Museums.

"William Morris Re-Visited: Questioning the Legacy" An Exhibition
This exhibition has moved to the Crafts Council Gallery in London from the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester, where phenomenal attendances of over 1000 a day have been recorded. Some 300 objects are on display, borrowed from museums and private collections in the UK, as well as from contemporary makers and workshops. An Exhibition organized jointly by the Crafts Council and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

"No Lost Art"
This exhibition at the William Morris Gallery in London features a selection of the best examples of Morris and Company stained glass work, including pieces by Morris, Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown and other associates. On Saturday 13 July there will be a talk by Peter Cormack to visitors from the Victorian Society. Cost £4 payable that day. William Morris 1834-1896
A major exhibition celebrating the life and work of William Morris at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7. The whole range of Morris's work and interests will be explored, including wallpapers, ceramic tiles, linoleum, stained glass, table glass, tapestries, carpets, embroideries, calligraphy, printed books, paintings, drawings, designs and furniture. His searching criticism of British society, his involvement with the early socialist movement, and his personal and family life are also examined. The Chaucer Summer Festival is being held between the above dates, and in that period, there will be a Chaucer and Morris Exhibition at the Canterbury Centre, St. Alphage Lane, off Palace Street, Canterbury, close to the Cathedral. The Centre is the former beautiful St. Alphage church. Admission is free.

37th Antiquarian Book Fair
Held this year at Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London, the Fair, which is the oldest international event of its kind, features books from 87 of the world's leading antiquarian booksellers. Exhibitors set aside items specially for the Fair, from illuminated MSS and early printed books and Children's books to modern first editions as well as autographs, letters and maps. To coincide with the William Morris Centenary, Frognal Rare Books is exhibiting a collection of the Kelmscott Press, excluding the Chaucer. Catalogues are £6 and can be obtained from the Organizers.

Three exhibitions at Vestry House Museum, Walthamstow, London. The first, in the Chainging Room Gallery, Lloyd Park, is of sculptures by local artists; this followed by Lorraine Huddle's interpetations of Morris wallpaper designs to explore the political heart of Morris's life, then by a display of art by local schoolchildren, inspired by Morris. The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medecine, Euston Road, London, has over 200 titles from Morris's library raninging from incunabula to 19th century reference books. Art Pottery: The Legacy of William Morris
This exhibition, at the City Museum and Art Gallery, Stoke on Trent, will include pottery from the Museum's internationally renowned Ceramics collection along with supporting Decorative Art and photographic material. Well-known names such as William De Morgan and Bernard Moore; leading art potteries including Pilkingtons, Royal Doulton, Ruskin and the Martin Brothers will be represented in the exhibition, alondside the work of lesser-known figures such as George Cartlidge and the decorative products of tile manufacturers Minton, Hollins & Co with their "Astra Ware" and Richard Tile's "Ricardia Ware."

William Morris Celebration including an Exhibition at Leek
Leek was the town where Morris acquired his dyeing skills. The town will stage a series of events including an exhibition, guided walks and talks. There will also be visits to local churches with Burne-Jones windows and Thomas Wardle's house.

A Palace of Victorian Art
Exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, devoted to the history of Grosvenor Gallery, dubbed "the palace of art" by the poplar press of the day. Over 100 painting and other works by artists supported by the gallery, Burne-Jones, Whistler, Watts, Alma Tadema etc. The exhibition layout will re-create the appearance of the Grosvenor Gallery; Hangings, prints and photographs will illustrate the Gallery had on what is now called "lifestyle".

Morris & Co Tiles
The William Morris Gallery hosts a first-ever exhibition devoted to the painted tiles of the Morris firm, featuring tiles and related designs by Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Philip Webb, Ford Madox Brown, Kate and Lucy Faulkner and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The Gallery has recently acquired a hitherto unrecorded Morris & Co tile panel of the 1860s, probably designed by Burne-Jones.

The Well of Art: A Celebration of the Life and Work of William Morris
The Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull will host this exhibition, which will have a thematic, rather than a chronological approach, and will integrate Morris's beliefs with visual examples of his work. It will cover all aspects of his life and avoid the layers of interpretation which obscure his significance by letting Morris speak for himself. The title is taken from his lecture "Art under Plutocracy" in which he states that "The well of art is poisoned at its spring."

William Morris: His Life and Times
At the Marx Memorial Library, 37a Clerkenwell Green, an 18th c building with manifold connexions with progressive movements, well-known to Morris. It was he who influenced the landlord to let the Social Democratic Federation's 20th Century press move there in 1892. The library has some 100,000 publication from the 1640s onward, and it is basically from these renowned resources that the Library will mount its celebratory exhibition.

Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum

William Morris and Architecture All-Day Symposium
Art Worker's Guild, 6 Queen's Square, London WC1N 3AR Open University. The Annual Symposium of the Society of Architectural Historian of Great Britain will take the form of a one-day programme of 6 lectures followed by discussion under the chairmanship of Dr. Alan Crawford. The papers will address the question of whether there is such a thing as Morrisian architecture, what it might consist of, and the influence Morris has had in later generations of architects. Each paper will be devoted to a suitable case study. Speakers include Ted Hollamby and Dr. Chris Miele as well as younger researchers at the start of their academic careers. The cost is £21.50 (17.50 for students) and cost will cover that of the printed text of the papers, which will be made available via desk-top publishing equipment.

"Nine Men's Morris"
A celebration of William Morris's birthday and of his life, with nine speakers focusing on Morris's influence within their areas (literature, politics, printing, stained glass, utopias, architecture, Iceland, crafts and design) and his importance in their lives. The speakers are: Hans Eckert, Ruth Ellison, Amanda Hodgson, Fiona MacCarthy, David O'Connor, Peter Preston, Nick Salmon, Tim Searcy and Ian Tod. On Saturday evening there will be a festive dinner and social evening with entertainment. On Sunday there will be a trip to David Mellor's innovative factory 'The Round House' followed by a visit to the 'William Morris and the Crafts Today' Exhibition at the Mappin Gallery. The weekend concludes with Arnold Rattenbury reading his eloquent poems of tribute: `The Morris Papers'. At Halifax Hall, The University of Sheffield. An event organized to mark the centenary of the death of William Morris, who was Philip Webb's close friend and associate. Sponsored by the University of York. "In the Footsteps of William Morris": a Study Tour
Offered through the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, the tour combines the main features of Morris's 1871 and 1873 expeditions in search of the northern sagas. Morris founded the SPAB in 1877. Open to non-members of the SPAB. Following the adventurous 1873 route across central Icelandic mountains, geysers and fjords, the journey will take 12 days and 11 nights and will be led by John Purkis, a former Honorary Secretary of the William Morris Society and the author of The Icelandic Jaunt.

William Morris Event: St. Lawrence Church Art Festival
Inspired by the work of Morris & Co at St. Lawrence and Gatcombe churches, the Morris centenary will be marked on the Isle of Wight by lectures and workshops on stained glass, wallpaper designs and Morris's contribution to the history of printing. Local artists and students are being encouraged to participate, particularly in schools-based events. Worker's Education Association, Norwich Branch Weekend Residential Course. Dr. ARH Glover is the Organizing Tutor of this course at Wensum Lodge Adult Education Centre, King Street, Norwich, in the oldest part of that city. Starts 6pm on Friday, continues to late afternoon Sunday. Meals available. Those wishing to attend course but not requiring accommodation are welcome. A Hammersmith Trades Council march from Weltje Road to Beadon Road and then on to Hammersmith Bridge. There will be street corner speeches and readings from the works of Morris. "It was no weeping matter". A day of remembrance and celebration to mark the centenary of the death of William Morris. The day includes tours of Kelmscott village and the Manor, a graveside tribute, lunch and afternoon tea. The coach departs from The George in Hammersmith Broadway at 9am. It returns at 6pm. William Morris: A Celebration of the Man
A celebration of William Morris, the man, his work and his influences. An evening event will be held at All Saints Church, Ruskington, Nr. Sleaford, Lincs. The South Aisle window of the church was designed by Burne Jones, who wrote in his account book "Ruskinton. Three lights of the Ascension (when will this deluge of Ascension stop?), L10 ea. L30". The window was made by Morris and Co. in 1874. The event will combone song by Ruskington Choir and an illustrated lecture on Morris by Geoff and Steph Weston, edperts in the History of Art from Nottingham and the Open University.

Arthur Sanderson & Sons had a long connection with Morris & Co and their archive contains many interesting items. Lesley Hoskins, who has written the wallpaper section of the V & A's William Morris Exhibition Catalogue, will explain the archive (which contains over 18,000 patterns) and compare Sanderson's patterns with contemporary Morris designs. The event will take place at Sanderson, 100 Acres, Oxford Road, Uxbridge, Middlesex. Tickets are £4 (strictly limited) from the William Morris Society.
